There is tremendous benefit in growing plants. Not only is there the satisfaction of harvesting and eating fresh produce but the educational impact of giving the children and young people the opportunity to learn that everyone can grow their own vegetables and fruit if given the basic skills to do so.
The Community Farm makes this happen. Through hands on approach vegetables and fruit are grown, harvested, cooked and eaten at the farm so it's quite literally from ‘field to fork!' Our polytunnel enables growing to continue throughout the year.
Any waste produced will be composted and reused on the farm. Different types of composting will enable wider opportunities for learning; wormeries, in addition to the traditional compost heap, will show how the smallest creatures can turn waste into valuable nutrients for the soil, thereby completing the full circle of sustainable living.
